Karnah, May 18 (JKNS): International Museum Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm at the newly inaugurated Shurya Gatha Complex at SM Hill, Karnah, which has rapidly emerged as one of the major tourist and heritage attractions in the frontier region of North Kashmir.
The prestigious complex was inaugurated by Lieutenant Governor on 14 May 2026 and has since attracted large numbers of tourists, students, history enthusiasts and culture lovers from different parts of Jammu and Kashmir.
The Shurya Gatha Complex houses two unique museums — the Pahari Culture Centre and the War Museum — dedicated to preserving the rich cultural heritage, traditions and military history of Karnah and the greater Kashmir region.
On the occasion of International Museum Day observed globally on 18 May, students from more than 10 Government Schools across Karnah visited the museums as part of an educational and awareness programme aimed at promoting the importance of preserving history, culture and heritage. Around 20 students from each school along with their teachers participated in the educational visit.
During the programme, teachers and museum guides explained in detail to the students about the historical importance of Karnah, the sacrifices of soldiers, traditional Pahari culture and the significance of preserving heritage for future generations. Students explored various galleries, historical artifacts and cultural exhibits reflecting the bravery and sacrifices of Indian soldiers as well as the vibrant traditions of the Pahari and Gujjar communities.
The museums provide visitors with a rare glimpse into the glorious past of the border region through an extensive collection of vintage photographs, antique weapons, traditional household items and centuries-old artifacts representing the lifestyle and culture of Karnah.
One of the major attractions at the Pahari Culture Centre is an old wooden Charkha from the Gandhian era, traditionally used for spinning cotton into yarn. The museum also preserves ancient utensils, earthen pots, traditional Kashmiri household items and several rare cultural artifacts reflecting the simplicity and richness of life in earlier times.
Meanwhile, the War Museum highlights the strategic and historical importance of the Karnah Sector and showcases detailed accounts, photographs and military memorabilia related to the 1947-48 war, the 1971-72 conflict and Operation Sindoor. The museum stands as a tribute to the courage and supreme sacrifices made by the armed forces in safeguarding the nation’s borders.
Apart from the museums, visitors at SM Hill also enjoy the famous Sadhna Café, where tourists and guests can enjoy quality food and refreshments in a peaceful atmosphere. The location offers breathtaking views of lush green mountains, fresh air and the serene beauty of nature, providing visitors with a true sense of peace and relaxation.
Local residents and guides expressed happiness over the increasing tourist footfall at SM Hill. “Earlier very few tourists visited these border areas, but now people are eager to explore the Shurya Gatha Complex and its museums. Visitors are showing keen interest in the history, culture and military legacy of Karnah. This is also creating livelihood opportunities for local guides, transporters, homestays and small businesses,” a local guide said.
Tourists visiting Karnah can also explore nearby attractions including Aazmat-e-Hind at Teetwal and the historic Sharda Temple, which are becoming popular destinations among visitors. Facilities including homestays and hotels are also available for tourists, making the region increasingly attractive for tourism and cultural exploration.
Officials stated that the museums are not merely repositories of historical treasures but also serve as bridges connecting present and future generations with the region’s centuries-old traditions, sacrifices and identity. They emphasized that such initiatives help preserve local heritage while promoting awareness, education and patriotism among youth.
The educational visit proved highly informative, inspiring and enriching for the students. Teachers noted that such programmes help young minds connect with history, understand cultural values and develop a strong sense of patriotism and respect for national heritage.
The Shurya Gatha Complex at SM Hill is steadily emerging as a symbol of cultural preservation, patriotism and tourism promotion in the border region of Karnah, attracting growing attention from visitors across Jammu and Kashmir. (JKNS)
