Shopian, June 21: National Democratic People’s Party (NDPP) Chairman Navneet Mishra on Saturday addressed a public meeting at Melhura in Zainpora area of Shopian district, where he highlighted several public concerns, including the long-pending demand for the construction of a bridge in the area.
The meeting was attended by NDPP Provincial President Iqbal Shunthoo, Provincial Secretary Omar Bhat, District President Shopian Javed Ahmed Bhat, and Vice President Pulwama Abdul Rashid Mir, along with local residents and party workers.
During the interaction, residents informed the party leadership that villagers are willing to provide land free of cost for the proposed bridge project. However, they alleged that despite repeated assurances from the authorities, no tangible progress has been made.
Addressing the gathering, Navneet Mishra criticized the elected representatives and the National Conference-led government for failing to resolve the issue. He said the Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department has delayed the project for years, causing inconvenience to local residents.
Mishra stated that governments should address public grievances rather than make repeated promises without implementation. He also reiterated the demand for the restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, describing it as a priority issue for the region.
The NDPP Chairman further announced that the party would submit a memorandum to the Divisional Commissioner seeking immediate intervention in the matter. He warned that if the demand continues to be ignored, the party would launch a democratic protest campaign in support of the affected residents.
Later, Mishra and Provincial President Iqbal Shunthoo attended a local cricket tournament in the village as chief guests. Speaking on the occasion, Mishra appreciated the organizers for promoting sports among youth and said such activities help channel young energy in a positive direction while discouraging drug abuse.
He assured full support from the party for future sporting events and announced assistance in the form of sports kits and uniforms for local players. Mishra also appreciated ongoing efforts under the “Nasha Mukti” campaign and urged youth organizations to actively promote sports and healthy lifestyles.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from local residents, youth, sports enthusiasts, and party workers.
