Sopore, Sept 19 (JKNS): The IQAC and UGC & Research Committee of Government Degree College Sopore, in collaboration with the college’s Science Departments, organised a one-day Science Outreach Programme for higher secondary school students of Sopore.
Held under the supervision of Principal Prof. (Dr.) Syed Muzaffar Ahmad, the programme aimed to promote scientific awareness, curiosity and inquiry among students through interaction with researchers and hands-on exposure to scientific activities.
A total of 56 students from Government Boys Higher Secondary School and Government Girls Higher Secondary School Sopore participated.
The programme was moderated by Dr. Nowsheen Hameed, Assistant Professor, Department of Biotechnology. Dr. Javeed Ahmad Sheikh, Coordinator IQAC, delivered the welcome address, while Principal Prof. (Dr.) Syed Muzaffar Ahmad, in his presidential address, stressed the importance of scientific awareness, academic engagement and meaningful learning opportunities for students.
The programme featured interactions with accomplished researchers from Baramulla district. Mr. Zeeshan, a neuroscience researcher at the University of California, San Francisco, encouraged students to develop scientific thinking through questioning and observation.
Dr. Adil Majeed Rather, DST INSPIRE Faculty at NIT Srinagar, introduced students to biomimicry and explained how nature can inspire technological innovation.
Dr. Rahila Nazir shared her academic journey from GDC Sopore to research experience at institutions including Johns Hopkins University and encouraged students to pursue their ambitions with perseverance and self-belief.
Dr. Javeed Rasool, Postdoctoral Research Associate at Boston University, highlighted the importance of discipline, consistency, curiosity and hard work in achieving academic and professional growth.
The inaugural session concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Pervaiz Ahmad Dar, Convener, UGC & Research Committee.
Students subsequently attended hands-on sessions across various science departments, where they were introduced to scientific techniques and developments including DNA extraction, microscopy, organic synthesis, blood testing, phytochemistry, artificial intelligence and web designing.
The programme concluded with a valedictory session during which students shared their feedback and were provided e-certificates. (JKNS)
