Srinagar, Oct 1 (JKNS): In a significant milestone for advanced maternal and fetal medicine in Kashmir, PARAS Health Srinagar has successfully performed a high-end fetal intervention for massive fetal pleural effusion, or chylothorax, marking what the hospital describes as the first such procedure in Kashmir and among the first in Jammu and Kashmir.

The complex procedure was carried out through a multidisciplinary collaboration involving Dr Irshad Ahmad Banday, Principal Consultant and HOD, Interventional Radiology; Dr Najma, Obstetrics and Gynaecology; and the Paediatrics and Neonatology team, with NICU backup kept ready throughout.

The intervention was completed uneventfully, and the mother was discharged in stable condition following the procedure.

“This is an important milestone for fetal and perinatal care in Kashmir. Such interventions require precise coordination between Interventional Radiology, Obstetrics, Neonatology, Anaesthesia, Nursing and the operating-room teams. The successful outcome reflects what multidisciplinary expertise can achieve for mothers and babies within the region,” Dr Irshad Ahmad Banday, Principal Consultant and HOD, Interventional Radiology, PARAS Health Srinagar, said.

The patient had been referred to the team by a senior consultant at SKIMS, reflecting growing collaboration between tertiary-care institutions and specialised teams for complex maternal and fetal cases.

Dr Banday said the procedure involved close coordination across departments, with the OBG, Interventional Radiology, NICU, Anaesthesia, Nursing, OT and support teams working together to ensure preparedness and safety.

The successful intervention expands the scope of specialised fetal and perinatal care available in Kashmir, particularly for pregnancies complicated by serious fetal conditions requiring intervention before birth.

For PARAS Health Srinagar, the case represents another step towards building advanced, multidisciplinary capabilities for complex maternal and neonatal care closer to patients in the region. (JKNS)
