New Delhi, Apr 24 (JKNS): In a significant political development, seven Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MPs on Friday switched sides and merged with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), boosting the strength of the ruling NDA in the Upper House.
As per details available with news agency JKNS, the MPs who joined BJP include Raghav Chadha, Sandeep Pathak, Ashok Mittal, Swati Maliwal, Harbhajan Singh, Vikram Sahni and Rajendra Gupta. The members submitted formal documents to the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha seeking approval for the merger.
Sources said that with this development, the NDA’s strength in the Rajya Sabha has increased to around 145 members. However, the alliance is still short of the two-thirds majority mark required for passing key constitutional amendments.
Officials said the merger is likely to be approved as the number of MPs shifting sides constitutes more than two-thirds of AAP’s strength in the Rajya Sabha. Further developments are expected after formal clearance by the Chairman. (JKNS)
