The patient was suffering from non-cancerous growth of prostate gland along with severe upper urinary tract changes, and had lost function of his right kidney —
Srinagar, May 9, 2026: The Department of Urology, Andrology and Robotic Surgery, Fortis Hospital Mohali, has recently treated a 61-year-old patient suffering from a highly complex condition via robot-assisted Partial Nephrectomy (portion of kidney containing tumour is removed, while preserving the remaining healthy kidney) and Water Vapor Therapy (Rezūm) – the latest form of minimal invasive surgical treatment for Prostate.
The team of doctors led by Dr Rohit Dadhwal, Senior Consultant, Department of Urology, Andrology and Robotic Surgery, Fortis Mohali, has conducted a rare combination of surgeries on a patient who was suffering from Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (non-cancerous growth of prostate gland which makes urination difficult), along with severe upper urinary tract changes, and had lost function of his right kidney. The patient’s left kidney, his only functional kidney, was also found to have a tumour.
The patient had been experiencing interrupted urine stream, frequent urination, and malaise following which he approached Dr Dadhwal at Fortis Hospital Mohali. In order to save the patient’s life and preserve his kidney function, Dr Dadhwal conducted robot-assisted Partial Nephrectomy wherein the tumour was completely removed and the remaining kidney was preserved. The patient’s urinary obstruction due to Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia was treated via Rezūm, which relieved the prostate obstruction.
The patient had a smooth, post-operative recovery and was discharged on the third day. The final, pathological report confirmed complete removal of the tumour.
Discussing the cases, Dr Dadhwal, said, “Kidney cancers are best treated via robot-aided surgery as it not only allows the surgeon to save the kidney by removing the tumour, but also gives best cancer control. Water Vapor Therapy (Rezūm) is a painless day-care procedure that is offered to patients who are at a high risk or are young and to want to preserve their fertility. The procedure involves injecting water vapors inside the prostatic parenchyma through a specialized hand-held radiofrequency device, which in time leads to progressive shrinkage of the prostate and improvement of symptoms. The entire procedure takes about five minutes and the patient is discharged on a catheter, which is removed after a week.”
Dr Dadhwal further said, “This case highlights the immense benefit of advanced robotic surgery combined with innovative minimally invasive therapies like Rezūm. We were able to preserve the patient’s only kidney and improve his quality of life.”
