Sopore, June 12 (JKNS): The Bar Association Sopore on Friday observed a token pen-down strike in protest against an alleged assault on a senior advocate in Tangmarg and the subsequent registration of an FIR against him, calling the incident a matter of serious concern for the legal fraternity.

According to a notice issued by the Bar Association Sopore, a copy of which lies with news agency JKNS, the Executive Committee unanimously resolved to observe a token pen-down strike following an incident that allegedly took place in Tangmarg on June 11 involving senior advocate Rafi-u-Zaman.

The association alleged that the advocate was subjected to physical assault and that an FIR was subsequently registered against him.

Strongly condemning the incident, the Bar Association expressed solidarity with Advocate Rafi-u-Zaman and the legal fraternity at large. It termed the alleged assault on an advocate as a grave act and described it as an example of highhandedness by law enforcement agencies.

The association said it was time for the legal community to raise its voice against such incidents and safeguard the dignity and independence of the legal profession.

Accordingly, all members of the Bar Association Sopore were requested to abstain from court work as a mark of protest. The association stated that the decision was taken unanimously by its Executive Committee and is binding on all members. (JKNS)
