Gurez, June 29 (JKNS): In a significant effort to preserve the rich cultural heritage of the border region, the Indian Army successfully revived the traditional sport of horse polo in Baktoor village near line of control LOC area in Gurez valley of North Kashmir’s Bandipora district after a gap of nearly five decades.

The event brought together local residents, youth, and polo enthusiasts, rekindling memories of a sport that was once an integral part of the region’s cultural identity. The initiative aimed not only to promote traditional sports but also to encourage community participation and strengthen the bond the Army and the local population.

Horse polo, which was once widely played across Gurez, had gradually disappeared over the years due to changing circumstances and limited opportunities. Its revival has been warmly welcomed by the local community, who described the event as a proud moment for the region.

Army officials said the initiative reflects their continued commitment to preserving local traditions, supporting youth enga ement, and promoting cultural heritage in remote border areas. They added that such events help inspire young people to reconnect with their roots while fostering sportsmanship and unity.

Local residents expressed their gratitude to the Indian Army for bringing back a cherished tradition that had been absent for nearly fifty years. Many hoped that horse polo would once again become a regular feature of Gurez’s cultural and sporting calendar.

The successful event highlighted the Indian Army’s ongoing efforts to promote community welfare, preserve cultural traditions, and strengthen ties with the people of Gurez through meaningful initiatives. (JKNS)
