Ganderbal, July 30 (JKNS): Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday said that a single protest would not bring results and asserted that sustained and repeated efforts were needed to ensure Jammu and Kashmir’s demand for restoration of statehood is heard.

Speaking to reporters in Ganderbal, Omar Abdullah said the National Conference took its protest to New Delhi with the understanding that the issue would not be resolved through a single demonstration.

“A promise made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir regarding restoration of statehood remains unfulfilled,” he said.

The Chief Minister said the National Conference did not wait for August 5 to raise the issue and had already approached New Delhi to press for its demand.

He said the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly had passed a resolution regarding the erstwhile state’s special status and constitutional guarantees, which had been forwarded to the Centre.

“Whatever steps are required on August 5 will be taken, but we are not waiting for that date to continue our efforts,” he said.

Commenting on the situation in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), Omar Abdullah expressed concern over reports of violence and the targeting of innocent civilians.

“We are all concerned. We can only hope that peace prevails there as well,” he said. (JKNS)
