Srinagar, Apr 24 (JKNS): Director Sher-i-Kashmir Medical Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura Srinagar, Prof. M. Ashraf Ganie, has been honoured with the prestigious Recognition of Academic Excellence (RAE) Award by the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) for his outstanding contributions to medical research and academia.
As per details available with news agency JKNS, Prof. Ganie received the Achanta Lakshmipathi RAE Award for the year 2026 in the field of Maternal and Child Health, Women’s Health and Community Nutrition, recognising his pioneering work in endocrinology and metabolic disorders, particularly Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and related non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
On the occasion of the 66th Foundation Day of NAMS held in New Delhi on April 21, 2026, Prof. Ganie delivered the National Recognition & Foundation Day Oration titled “PCOS as a Central Driver of NCDs Epidemic in India,” aligning with national initiatives aimed at improving women’s health and empowerment.
The award, comprising a citation plaque and gold medal, was presented by senior officials in the presence of eminent medical experts. Prof. Ganie’s work has significantly contributed to understanding the link between PCOS and major health conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and metabolic disorders.
He also served as National Chief Coordinator for the ICMR PCOS Task Force Study, a landmark multi-centre research project conducted across 18 institutions in India, generating the country’s first large-scale composite data on PCOS.
A highly accomplished academician, Prof. Ganie has authored over 255 research publications and has received more than 25 national and international awards. Under his leadership, SKIMS continues to strengthen its role as a leading centre for advanced healthcare, research and academic excellence. (JKNS)
